Plain-English explainer

What "USA Pickleball Quiet Category" actually means

  1. It's an acoustic designation from USA Pickleball, separate from its Competition-Certified (tournament) category. Equipment qualifies if it produces essentially 50% or less of the acoustic footprint of equipment commonly used in community parks.Source: USA Pickleball Quiet Category announcement, Sep 25, 2023.
  2. It covers more than paddles. The category includes paddles, balls, paddle covers and screens. As of Nov 3, 2026 the list shows 17 paddles, 4 cover/pad products and 4 balls.Source: equipment.usapickleball.org/acoustic-equipment
  3. Manufacturers apply; players don't. A maker registers with USA Pickleball (a $2,500 registration fee is listed), submits samples and waits for test results. The per-model testing fee isn't published.Source: USA Pickleball equipment registration page.
  4. "Green Zone" is a different list. Many HOAs use the Sun City Grand (Surprise, AZ) Green Zone list, which came from that community's own sound study, not from USA Pickleball.Source: Sun City Grand Community Association paddle approved/banned list notice.
Covers count only where the rule says so. Laguna Beach's ordinance accepts USA Pickleball-approved covers, sleeves or overlays. Glen Abbey HOA names two cover products. Most other rules list paddles only, so check the source before you buy.

Quiet-court kit for boards & HOAs

We're putting together a kit for boards that have adopted, or are weighing, a quiet-equipment rule: quiet gear for loaner bins, court signage and a rules template. Nothing is for sale yet. Tell us about your courts and we'll send a quote when the kit is ready.

A quote request isn't an order and costs nothing. The kit is not USA Pickleball certified.

Questions

Is this official?

No. This is an independent directory, not affiliated with USA Pickleball, any city or any HOA. Each entry links to the official page or document it came from, and the source always wins.

How is a rule "verified"?

We open the primary source (a city code, park page or HOA document), confirm the quiet-equipment rule is stated there, and record the date we checked. Entries with only news coverage, or where the official page wasn't reachable, are left out.

Will a paddle cover make my paddle legal?

Only if the rule allows covers. Of the paddle rules listed here, two say so explicitly. Many HOA rules list specific paddles only. Filter by "Covers accepted" to see them.
